Ek – “One” in the Pack

Movie Review By Raju Shanbhag

ekthepowerofoneFrom a business point of view, there is ‘one’ factor that separates “Ek – the power of one” from its original Telugu version Athudu, and that factor is called Mahesh Babu. While Mahesh Babu can display the cunning of a snake and the innocence of child all at once on his face; it’s not the same with Bobby Deol. The dude wears only Ek expression for most part of the film and in such cases, the box office results are usually ‘one’ dimensional.

Bobby dear, when the director named the film “Ek – the power of one” he must have already witnessed your acting talents. After all, Sangeeth Sivan is renowned for his comedy!

The story or the screenplay of the film Ek has many moments that can be considered unique. Bobby Deol is a professional killer who is hired to attack a politician (not to kill him, but just to attack him so that he gets sympathy votes from people; a real good idea for politicians for the upcoming general elections!) But before Bobby pushes away the strand of hair falling irritatingly over his face and aims at the minister, some other professional who knows the value of haircut shoots the minister down and kills him with a neat bullet shot on his bald forehead.

Now, Bobby is on the run and it’s no fun when he jumps over a moving train from the 20th floor of a building. There’s this Punjabi Munda on the train who has huge strands of hair like Bobby and gets killed because of that by a police inspector, who thinks it’s perfectly alright to shoot at people in a crowded railway station. The Punjabi Munda is no more and Bobby reaches his place to deliver the news. But the huge family of Punjabi Munda thinks that Bobby is the Munda (they have not seen him since he ran away from home when he was a kid).

And then, there is this really hilarious track of Nana Patekar who plays a lecherous CBI officer who is investigating the murder case. The hidden twists in a case and the exposed curves of a woman interest him equally. Many of his dialogues are hilarious but if you want to take your child to this movie and show what a great actor Nana is, we would suggest otherwise.

Even though the film has unique opportunity to be different within the commercial parameters, the director works overtime to make this a typical Bollywood fare! There are the usual fight and song sequences and the picture perfect Punjabi family consisting of sumptuous paddy fields and well endowed, paratha fed mid aged ladies, trying to look young and hot. Khulbhushan Kharbanda plays an elderly man who has given up hopes of future and considering the type of roles he is getting these days, he just has to be himself throughout the film. Chunkey Pandey appears in just one scene and you thank your lucky stars for that.

Watch Ek only if you have time to kill.
